The Debate Over Book Bans

The American Library Association (ALA) has reported that 4,240 unique book titles were targeted for censorship in school and public libraries in 2023, a 65 percent increase over the prior year. For public libraries alone, the percentage increase over 2022 was an incredible 92 percent. Proponents of book bans argue some books are just not appropriate for all ages while opponents fear an escalating erosion of educational diversity.

The Wildcat Family Friendly Study Space in the Meriam Library is a fun and cozy area near the children's and young adult books on the 4th floor. Sometimes parents or guardians go to college later in life or go back to college to continue their education. The WFFSS is a special space for students who also care for kids, so they can study while those children enjoy reading and exploring new stories.

Book in Common Display on Second Floor

Meriam Library is proud to be a destination in the travelling exhibit for Book in Common author Clint Smith. In his book How the Word is Passed, Smith reckons with the history of slavery across America, as well as opens up a conversation about this underexplored topic in our collective history. Smith asserts that “our country is in a moment, at an inflection point, in which there is a willingness to more fully grapple with the legacy of slavery, and how it shaped the world we live in today.”

The Dream Center and Meriam Library will screen the film "The Undocumented Lawyer," a film about Lizbeth Mateo, an attorney who swore to uphold the Constitution. She’s also undocumented. When a client takes sanctuary in a church, Lizbeth’s own experience guides their fight for justice.
Join us for a panel discussion with campus community members on the first floor of Meriam Library in the Research Commons Wednesday, March 13 from 5 to 6:30 pm.
