Celebrate Banned Books Week: September 22-September 28, 2019 at Meriam Library.

The 2019 theme, “Censorship Leaves Us in the Dark,” urging everyone to “Keep the Light on,” is a reminder to not let censors take books out of our hands! How can you support banned books and your First Amendment right to read? Here are three easy things you can do:

1. Check out a banned or challenged book from our collection. Many will be on the display on the 4th floor of Meriam Library, across from the elevators.

2. Let us know you favorite banned book and be eligible to win a T-shirt or book bag. Contest starts Monday, Sept. 23, 2019.

3. Pick up a banned book button to wear proudly!

Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. For more information, view our handy guide

Challenges do not simply involve a person expressing a point of view; rather, they are an attempt to remove material from the curriculum or library, thereby restricting the access of others. Most challenges are unsuccessful and most materials are retained. This happens only thanks to the efforts of librarians, teachers, students, and community members who stand up and speak out for the freedom to read. ¹
